Additional information from above auction:
Lot 337
1955 Jaguar XK140 3.4-Liter Roadster
Chassis no. S811237
Engine no. G28708S
US$ 80,000 - 100,000
£48,000 - 59,000

This XK140 was the subject of an extensive restoration by Stuart Bailey of Walpole, NH in the mid-1990s. Mr. Bailey, a highly experienced XK restorer, restored this car for his own personal use. Said to have been the second to the last of the more than 30 XKs he restored, the car was used by Mr. Bailey for over 30,000 miles after completing the restoration, and attended numerous shows and events.

Mr. Bailey restored the car to be highly authentic with the exception of the transmission--a Ford T-5 and the very desirable Abarth quad pipe exhaust. These minor changes absolutely transform the way the car drives. Having proper synchros along with a nice overdrive fifth is a wonderful thing when combined with the delightful exhaust note. For the purist, the original transmission is included with the car.

The car was sold by Mr. Bailey to the current owner in 1998. It has been looked after diligently in that time and any small issues have been corrected. When not being used to enjoy the New England back roads the car has been stored in a climate controlled garage.

It is offered with an extensive file documenting all the work the current owner has done, as well as with its original handbook and service manual. This beautifully presented, lovingly maintained and great driving Jaguar is highly recommended.

Car now offered at:

Sellers description:
Location: Stratford, Connecticut, 06615
VIN #: S 811237
Mileage: 35478
Transmission: Manual
Condition: Mint
Exterior: Red
Interior: Tan
1956 JAGUAR XK 140 ROADSTER

The car offered here sports all the available options including the SE package with the "C" type head. In addition, a big improvement for highway driving was the addition of a five speed manual gearbox which gives comfortable cruising at highway speeds. The car is finished in Red paint with tan leather seats. A black convertible top is stowed behind the seats with matching side curtains. This car, S811237 has completed 34,478 miles. Aside from the 5 speed gearbox the only other addition to the car is an electric cooling fan to ensure correct engine operating temperature in hot weather. (The original Moss 4 speed gearbox comes with the car.) Aside from these two items the car is stock. The red paint, while not a recent respray, is in excellent condition with very few flaws. The entire car was subject to a full frame off restoration several years ago by a well recognised marque specialist and this is fully documented in print and photos which are available on request.

The whole car presents as new and that can be seen from the attached photographs. The underhood is beautifully detailed to a true concours level. The interior is close to perfection, showing a nice patina from careful use, exactly what one would expect from car that has been driven and enjoyed. The exterior is in excellent condition and belies the fact that it has not been recently painted.

This car is surely one of the best 140's that we have ever seen and without any doubt the car could be immediaely shown or would be ready for some great rallying adventure or long distance road touring. Whatever the future brings, this car will certainly not dissapoint. Priced at $145,000.00.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
