Classified ad, asking £89,995. Seller classic_and_sportscar

    Sellers description:
DXS 880 is a UK home market, matching numbers car still in its correct original colour of Sherwood Green with Suede Green upholstery. This late, rare 3.8 FHC was distributed on 24th June 1960 and supplied new by Ritchies, Glasgow. The XK was first registered on Christmas Eve of 1960 and was purchased by Paisley Brassworks & Co Ltd. From the cars original brown 'buff' logbook we know the XK was still owned by the Company in 1969 and an MOT certificate from 9th January 1969 is still with the car. The history also contains tax discs from 1962, 1963 and 1964. There are no records of the XK being on the road during the 1970's and 1980's but we know in 1989/1990 the car was sold in need of restoration with a mileage recorded at 60,000. DXS 880 had been dry stored in an old barn for many years and was purchased by a Company Director and senior figure in Gaelic Football circles in Northern Ireland.

The XK was delivered to a restorer who began dismantling the car and taking it back down to a bare chassis. We have photographs showing the car in need of restoration and at various stages including as a bare chassis with the body removed. The body was totally rebuilt and was lead loaded as original and the car was restored to its factory specification. We have invoices from 1990-1995 totalling in the region of £25,000 and we have confirmation that whilst the engine was rebuilt, the gearbox and differential were not in need of any work fitting with the low mileage of 60,000. Parts required for the brakes, suspension and steering were bought from Coventry Auto Components and this included brake hoses, piston rebuild kits, master cylinder and slave cylinder rebuild kits, hand brake pads, brake pads, track rod ends, steering rack mounts, rear springs, shock absorbers, top and lower ball joints and anti-roll bar bushes. Further new parts included a full exhaust system, exhaust manifolds, all new hoses, lower radiator cowel, engine mounts, The interior was kept as original as possible, carpets and headlining have been replaced and the front seats re-covered in leather but everything else is original. There is an invoice from March 1995 to September 1996 completing the full restoration and this final stage included 1,683 hours which at today's labour rates would cost well over £80,000 alone. Parts for this final stage cost over £2,000 including various re-chroming, re-wiring, new windscreen, refurbished original steering wheel, new rubbers, batteries and all new copper petrol pipes and ends. The XK was finished to an exceptional, high standard and was then in regular low mileage use in Northern Ireland from 1997 to 2009 covering around 2000 miles. In 2010 the XK was then sold by us to a regular customer in Kent who has owned the car for five years.

Whilst the XK had a thorough, top quality restoration, it changed hands after covering just a couple of thousand miles over fourteen years since the rebuild was finished. From 2010 to 2015 a further £25,000 has been spent on taking this XK to the next level and as a result the car comes to us in exceptional order. Over five years the XK has covered another 3000 miles taking the overall recorded mileage to 65000 and the car has won several shows including Kent Classic Car Show 2015 (600 cars exhibited). Work and improvements over the five years include a new brake servo, front and rear uprated Coopercraft 4 pot callipers, replacement brake master cylinder, new fuel tank, rebuilt carburettors, renewed steering rack mounts, steering rack and track rod ends, re-cored radiator, replacement rev counter generator, re-conditioned oil pressure and water gauges, new starter motor, Aldon Ignitor electronic ignition, battery charger point, battery isolator, spot lights, new Avon tyres and at the cost of £12,000 alone a complete engine rebuild with a new clutch and spin on oil filter conversion fitted at the same time.

From the condition the car has arrived in and of course the recent programme of work we can confirm the XK is in excellent, first class mechanical order. The engine has only completed a couple of thousand miles since rebuild and holds excellent oil pressure and performs superbly. Performance from the 3.8 unit it outstanding, the car feels strong, quick and robust. The Moss gearbox is great to use, the overdrive works perfectly and the XK handles and brakes superbly with the benefit of the Coopercraft callipers. Having recently won prizes, it's clear the bodywork, paintwork and chrome present beautifully. The Sherwood Green paint has a stunning deep finish and the panels are beautifully straight. The car is very sharp with a lovely clean engine bay and the spare wheel compartment equally as good. Wire wheels and tyres are excellent and the interior delightful. The underside is stunning with a first class, clean chassis so the car is in perfect order for immediate use, long distance touring, rallies and shows. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a correct, UK matching numbers car that has been subject of no expense spared restoration. Not only is condition key, this car comes with the provenance of low mileage, low ownership and has correct paperwork to include original 'buff' logbook, Heritage Certificate and of course the car retains its original registration mark, original engine and is still in correct original colours.
