This 1955 Jaguar XK140 is a left-hand-drive drophead coupe that was manufactured on February 7, 1955, and distributed by Henlys of London, England. It was noted for Personal Export Delivery and is said to have been first acquired by an employee of the US State Department, who later imported the car to Palo Alto, California. It was acquired by the current owner’s father in 1968, and a refurbishment was performed between 1970 and 1973. The car is finished in British Racing Green with a black top over tan leather upholstery, and power comes from a 3.4-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. Service performed since December 2018 reportedly included rebuilds of the water pump and wheel cylinders as well as the installation of a new battery, spark plugs, and coolant hoses. This XK140 DHC is now offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with an operator’s handbook, a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, a rebuilt Ecko three-band radio, under-dash panels with a mounted speaker, a set of five painted 54-spoke wire wheels and unmounted Denman WSW tires and inner tubes, Bassett’s headliner material, other spare parts, and a clean Washington title in the owner’s name listing the car as a 1955 Jaguar 120.
The Drophead Coupe features an integrated windshield frame, roll-up side windows, exterior door handles, and an insulated convertible top with a plastic rear window. Delivered from the factory in Pastel Blue, the car underwent a color change to white in the late 1960s and was reportedly painted in its current British Racing Green acrylic lacquer in the early 1970s. Features include dual exhaust outlets, full-width bumpers with overriders, fender-mounted mirrors, and a body-length chrome center spear. Areas of paint touch-ups are noted by the seller.
The chrome 16” wire wheels wear two-eared knock-off spinners and are mounted with older Pirelli Cinturato tires that should be replaced according to the seller. A matching spare wheel and tire are fitted under the trunk floor, and a set of five painted 54-spoke wire wheels are included in the sale along with a set of unmounted Denman WSW tires and inner tubes. Replacement steering rack mounts are said to have been installed in 2015, and a rebuild of the wheel cylinders was performed in December 2018 along with a brake fluid flush. Additional service of the brake system is recommended by the seller.
The seats are said to have been retrimmed in tan Bridge of Weir leather during the 1970s refurbishment. A rebuilt Ecko three-band radio is included in the sale along with a set of under-dash panels with a mounted speaker. The shift boot is torn, and moth damage is noted in the carpets and cloth headliner. Spare leather and Bassett’s headliner material are included in the sale.
The four-spoke steering wheel fronts a burl wood dashboard with Smiths instrumentation including a reverse-sweep tachometer with an inset clock as well as a 140-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The fuel level gauge and clock are inoperable. The five-digit odometer is said to have been reset during the 1970s refurbishment and shows under 5,800 miles. Total mileage is unknown.
The 3.4-liter inline-six is said to have been fitted with a replacement block and rebuilt by Penniman & Richards of San Jose, California, during the 1970s refurbishment. Additional work reportedly included the installation of Jahns 9:1 pistons, rewelding and resurfacing of the water jackets, reground and Parkerized camshafts by Elgin Cams, and a rebuild of the Marston Excelsior radiator. A replacement starter motor was fitted in 2015, a December 2018 service included a rebuild of the water pump and the installation of new coolant hoses and coolant. A new battery and spark plugs were installed in December 2020.
Cylinder head stamping G2481–8 matches the engine number listed on the chassis tag and Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. A Lucas solid state fuel pump was installed in 2015, and a spare fuel tank float and sending unit are included in the sale.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate lists factory colors and identification numbers as well as a manufacture date of February 7, 1955.
