The XK 120 offered here, chassis number 679916, is documented by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate as having arrived at the facility of famous Los Angeles Jaguar dealer Charles Hornburg on August 25, 1952. In 1994, while reportedly a rust-free and intact car, it underwent a conversion to a racing car by British Auto of Manchester, New Hampshire, for David Fromer of Peabody, Massachusetts. Mr. Fromer raced the car extensively at Lime Rock, Pittsburgh, Mont-Tremblant, and Pocono, as well as in various JCNA events, for the next five years. It was further campaigned until 2005 by its next owner, Robert Mooney of Hartford, Connecticut, with maintenance by Tivvy's Autocraft of Richmond, Vermont, according to information provided by the current consignor.

Since its acquisition by the current owners in 2006, the car has been converted to rallying specs by C.W. Richert of Glendale, Arizona. It currently has a more comfortable, near road-spec interior and runs an XK 120 block with an XK 150 3.8-liter cylinder head, as well as a fully synchromesh five-speed Borg-Warner transmission and disc brakes at all four wheels. In this form, it has participated in such events as the Colorado Grand (2007), California Mille (2008), and Going to the Sun Rally (2009).

An entertaining Jaguar for rallying enjoyment, this car has been professionally built to be driven and stands ready to provide many hours of fun for its next owner. What could be better?

This 1952 Jaguar XK120 Fixed Head Coupe was reportedly modified as a race car during the mid-1990s and used for various Jaguar Club and vintage racing events through 2005. The car was subsequently converted for rally use and is said to have participated in the 2007 Colorado Grand, 2008 California Mille, and 2009 Going to the Sun rallies prior to being acquired by the current owner in 2016. The car is finished in red over a black interior and powered by a bored and stroked 3.4-liter inline-six mated to a ZF five-speed manual transmission. Additional equipment includes a Howe aluminum radiator, a Fuel Safe racing cell, an oil cooler, a Facet electric fuel pump, Koni front shocks, CNC front brake calipers, tri-bar headlamps, 16” wire wheels, a padded roll bar, and Simpson racing harnesses. This XK120 coupe is now offered on consignment by the selling dealer with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate and a clean Florida title.

Originally finished in Birch Grey, the car was repainted its current shade of red during the early 1990s. Exterior details include a leather hood strap, tri-bar headlamps, an electrical cutoff switch, chrome side mirrors, rear bumperettes, and hood vents. Cracks are noted around the lower front valance and the seller describes corrosion around the base of the windshield.

Chrome 16” wire wheels wear two-eared knock-off spinners and are mounted with 185-width Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. A full-size spare is found in the trunk. Koni shocks and CNC brake calipers have been installed up front.

The cabin houses two low-back bucket seats that are trimmed in black vinyl and equipped with Simpson racing harnesses. A padded roll bar has been added, and a fire extinguisher is mounted on the rear deck.

A wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of a burl wood dash housing Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 12k miles, approximately 600 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The replacement 3.4-liter inline six has reportedly been bored to 83mm and fitted with a 101mm stroker crankshaft. Induction is through dual SU carburetors. A Fuel Safe racing cell has also been installed along with a Facet electric fuel pump and a Howe aluminum radiator with an electric cooling fan. An oil cooler has been installed in the passenger-side front wheel well.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a ZF five-speed manual transmission. Additional underside images are presented in the gallery.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate lists factory colors, delivery information, and identification numbers as well as a manufacture date of August 19, 1952.

Manufactured in August 19, 1952 and distributed to Charles Hornburg in Los Angeles, California. In 1994, the car was given a frame off conversion to race spec for David Fromer of Peabody, Massachusetts. The work was completed by British Auto of Manchester, New Hampshire.

Mr. Fromer raced the Jaguar from 1994 to 1999 at Lime Rock, Pittsburg, Mont Tremblant, and Pocono as well as various Jaguar Club events. During this time the car was maintained and further improved by Tivvy’s Autocraft of Richmond, Vermont.

In March 2000 the car was sold to Robert Moody of Hartford, Connecticut. Mr. Mooney raced it through 2005 at Lime Rock and NHIS Vintage events with maintenance and modifications still performed by Tivvy’s Autocraft.

Ted Gildred of Encinitas, California purchased the car in December, 2006. At this time it was converted to touring spec with the addition of a fully synchronized 5 speed transmission and the addition of front disc brakes. This work was performed by C.W. Richert of Glendale, Arizona. The car participated in the 2007 Colorado Grand.

The current owner resides in Boca Raton, Florida and purchased the car in 2016. The intention was to use it for touring and events. However, it has been sparingly used as it is part of a large collection. The car has been fully maintained in ready condition with a recent upgrade to the brake master cylinder. A recent 30 mile outing in the car proved it to be reliable, comfortable, and competent. 

According to the Heritage Certificate, the car left the factory in the color of Birch Grey. Significant documentation dating back to 1993 and the log books from when it raced also accompany the car. There are also photos of the initial conversion to a race car.
