This stunning example comes to auction from a very meticulous Jaguar enthusiast who has had several Jaguars over the years. Most impressively, this 1953 XK 120 Roadster has remained in its gentleman owner’s collection for the past 17 years. Although in beautiful condition when purchased, the enthusiast owner was not satisfied until it was perfect. The vendor undertook a complete restoration including complete disassembly and stripping to the bare metal and the vehicle was found to have absolutely no rust. The XK 120 was then subsequently completely refinished to concours standards.

The interior is completely new including trunk, using correct black Connoly hides, Wilton carpets and correct lining and sound deadening materials. The roadster was treated to a new top, side screens and tonneau cover using premium English double duck pure cotton material.

Mechanically the car has been completely serviced and rebuilt as necessary, including engine disassembly with some of the rebuilding including new cylinder heads, cam shafts as well as several other major mechanical components ensuring its proper and expected operating condition.

This Jaguar is understood to run, drive and perform beautifully. The owner reports that absolutely no fillers were used in place of metalwork. This is a superb example of Jaguar’s XK 120 and will undoubtedly be a pleasure to own for many years to come as it has been
for its current long time owner.

    Auction description:
    Monterey Sports & Classic Car Auction - Friday, August 18, 2006 - Saturday, August 19, 2006
    1953 Jaguar XK 120M Roadster
    LOT: 444
    ESTIMATE: $90,000 - $120,000
    CHASSIS NO: S674089
    OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
AUCTION RESULTS: Lot was Sold at a price of $93,500

    Engine No. F2930-85

Featuring factory “M” modifications the XK 120 roadster presented here was originally sold in New Mexico to the owner of Ohio Heating and Cooling Co. in Cleveland. The car was purchased from the original owner’s estate, which included over 60 Jaguars in all, July 6, 1988 and has virtually not been driven since.

Today the car remains a two owner vehicle and it displays only 18,000 miles on the odometer though we understand that at some point the engine was replaced with a proper example. Aside from replaced upholstery, it is totally stock that shows no rust or serious wear and the underside of car looks as new and clean as outside.

A timewarp example, this XK 120M would perfectly complement the desires of any collector seeking the rewards of owning a highly original example of the postwar Jaguar that re-wrote the rules for production sports cars.

    Additional description from above auction:

    Lot 333
    1953 Jaguar XK120M Roadster
    Chassis no. S674089
Engine no. KE 4996-8 (see text)
    • 3.4-liter, DOHC, 210hp straight six
    • 4-speed manual

    • Desirable 'M' specification
    • Two long-term Midwest owners
    • Accompanied by Jaguar-Daimler Heritage Trust certificate.

Finished in a dark British Racing Green hue with black leather seats and color coded wire wheels shod with Blockley triple stud tires, this Jaguar is one of the most handsome XK120 Roadsters that we have seen. Its presentation is both subtle yet almost menacing - and it certainly means business!

A desirable 'M' specification car as designated by its 'S' chassis number prefix, it is understood that the car was delivered new in New Mexico to the owner of Heating and Cooling Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. As reported when purchased the car was thought to have resided in this same ownership until 1988, where it shared stable with a considerable number of others of the same marque. At this point the car passed into the previous ownership but one, where again it would remain in a private collector's hands for the next 17 years. Its restoration is understood to have been completed during that custodianship and most probably during this process it received a replacement block from a Mark 1 3.4 Liter car, while seemingly retaining the original cylinder head which is consistent with other 'M' cars. In addition to its beautiful paint and new interior, a new top and side-screens were fitted also, providing full weather protection.

In the Oldenburg Family Collection for the last six and a half years the car has been truly appreciated and enjoyed. Described by the collection's manager as 'going like a scolded cat', the 120 really goes as well as it looks.

A perfect entry for the variety of road rallies that exist today, it'll surely be one of the best looking on any event.

    Without reserve
Sold for US$ 97,750 inc. premium
